About UPSC EXAM

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), a constitutional body conducts UPSC CAPF (UPSC Central Armed Police Forces) for making a merit based selection for Assistant Commandants in 179 posts. The recruitment is for Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

The exam will be conducted on August 9, 2020. Interested candidates can fill the Application form from April 22, 2020, to May 12, 2020.  

  • UPSC CAPF is conducted in 4 Phases i.e., Written Exam, Physical Standards/Physical Efficiency Tests and Medical Standards Tests, Interview/Personality Test, Final Selection/Merit
  • Basic eligibility is that candidate should be 20 years before August 2, 1994 and maximum age limit is 25 years later than August 1, 1999.
  • A candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree (B.Com / B.A. / B.Sc / B.Tech / BBA etc) from recognised university

How To Prepare

UPSC CAPF 2020 Exam Pattern

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) designs and releases CAPF Exam Pattern. UPSC CAPF 2020 exam pattern is similar to the previous year exam pattern. The exam is held in offline mode. The exam consists of 3 levels which are a Written Exam, Medical Test and Interview/ Personality Test.

Written Exam

UPSC CAPF 2019 written exam to be conducted by UPSC has been held on August 9, 2020 and will comprise two papers. Timing for Paper I will be from 10 a.m. Morning to 12.00 Noon and Paper II will start from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m.

  • Paper I: General Ability and Intelligence (250 Marks)

The questions in this paper will be of Objective Type Multiple Choice Questions and will be given in both the language English as well as Hindi.

  • Paper II: General Studies, Essay and Comprehension (200 Marks)

Candidate will have option to choose medium of writing the Essay component either in English or in Hindi, but in the remaining part of Paper II, there will not be any option, candidate will have to answer in English only.

NOTE I: UPSC has allowed candidate to choose language either Hindi or English to write essay in Paper II

  • Candidate should write the answers only in the medium allowed by the UPSC for the different Components as mentioned above.
  • Marks will not be awarded, if answers are written in a medium except the medium allowed in the Paper.
  • Candidates will have to mention the medium of Essay component in the Attendance Lists and on the Answer Book.
  • Candidate must be careful while mentioning language either English or Hindi on Attendance List and Answer Book;
  • It should be same to the language Essay Component is written; in case answering language and mentioning language is not the same, no mark will be awarded for this part of test.

NOTE-II: There will be minimum qualifying marks separately in each Paper as may be fixed by the Commission in their discretion. Passing in Paper-I will qualify for evaluation of Paper-II; therefore, minimum qualifying marks will have to be obtained in Paper I for next round.   

NOTE-III: Negative Marking Scheme will be applied to Paper-1. Marks 1/3 or 33% of Marks assigned to the Question for which Wrong Answer is given. Suppose Mark assigned to a Question is 6 then on wrong answer – 1/3 or 33% of 6 i.e. 2 marks will be deducted.

Exam Syllabus

UPSC CAPF 2020 Syllabus

There are 4 Phases in recruitment process under UPSC CAPF 2020 exam. Syllabus is given for written exam which will be held in 2 parts. Each Part will have 1 Paper. It means there would be 2 Papers in 2 parts; Paper 1 in part 1 and Paper 2 in part 2.

UPSC CAPF 2019 Written Exam Syllabus for both the papers is as follows:

UPSC CAPF 2020 - Paper I: ( Total questions – 200 ; Total Marks – 250; Duration – 2 hours)

General Ability and Intelligence: Under this subject, 6 topics will be covered and objective type multiple choice questions will be asked.

  • General Mental Ability: Questions are intended to test the logical reasoning, quantitative aptitude, numerical ability, and data interpretation ability.
  • General Science: General awareness of science, scientific temper, knowledge and importance of scientific experiments of everyday observation including new areas of importance like IT, Biotechnology, and Environmental Science.
  • Current Events of National and International Importance: The questions will test the candidates’ awareness of current events of national and international level the fields of governance, globalisation, business, industry, sports, culture, arts, literature, sports, and music.
  • Indian Polity and Economy: The questions target is to test candidates’ knowledge about Country’s political system and the Constitution of India, social life and public administration, economic development in India, regional and international security issues and human rights including its indicators.
  • History of India: The questions will broadly cover the subject in its social, economic and political aspects. This shall also include the areas of growth of nationalism and freedom movement.
  • Indian and World Geography: The questions shall cover the physical, social and economic aspects of geography pertaining to India and the World.

UPSC CAPF 2020 - Paper II: (Total questions - 7; Total Marks – 200; Duration – 3 Hours)

General Studies, Essay and Comprehension

  • Part-A – Essay questions which are to be answered in long narrative form either in Hindi or English totalling 80 Marks. The indicative topics are related to Indian Politics and Economy, modern Indian history especially of the freedom struggle, geography, social security and human rights issues and analytical ability.
  • Part-B – Comprehension, précis writing, other communications / language skills – to be attempted in English only (Marks 120) – The topics are Comprehension passages, précis writing, developing arguments, basic grammar and vocabulary.
Exam Eligibility

PSC CAPF Eligibility involves the criteria of academic qualification, age and physical standards of the candidates. The candidate who has obtained a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline recognized by the government are eligible to apply for CAPF 2019.

The candidate must have acquired a minimum age of 20 years. The upper age limit of the candidate must be 25 years. However, the upper age limit can be relaxed for candidates belonging to various reserved categories.

The candidate who wishes to apply for CAPF 2020 must be an Indian national. Both female and male candidates can apply for the CAPF exam. There are different medical standards set by UPSC to apply for the desired post through UPSC CAPF 2020.

Qualification for UPSC CAPF 2020

There are certain educational qualifications that the applicants must possess to be eligible for CAPF. Those who do not meet the criteria are advised to refrain from applying.

  • As part of UPSC CAPF Eligibility Criteria, candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree from a government recognised university.The University should be incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India.
  • Other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section-3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 are also acceptable.
  • Those candidates, who have appeared in the qualifying examination and have yet not got their results, can also apply for CAPF Exam. But, it must be kept in mind that the admission would be provisional until the candidate produces proof of passing the examination after qualifying the entrance test of CAPF.
  • Those candidates who possess professional and technical qualifications recognised by Government as equivalent to professional and technical degree would also be considered eligible to apply for CAPF AC.
  • There may be some exceptions in which UPSC may treat a candidate who doesn’t have any of the above-mentioned qualifications as a qualified candidate, given that they have passed an examination conducted by the other Institutions, whose standard justifies their eligibility.

Age Limit for CAPF 2020

As of August 1, 2020, the applicant must be older than 20 years and younger than 25 years, in order to fulfil the CAPF Assistant Commandant Eligibility criteria. It must be noted that, the upper age limit can be relaxed for certain candidates, depending on the category they belong to. The details are summarised below in the table:

Nationality Considerations for UPSC CAPF 2019

The candidate must be an Indian citizen to be eligible for UPSC CAPF. Those who hold citizenship of Nepal and Bhutan are also deemed eligible for this exam. Applicants who belong to other nationalities will not be appointed or employed in the Armed Police Forces, unless they have been granted the consent of the Central Government. This must be signified in writing to be considered.

Physical Standards and Medical Fitness for UPSC CAPF 2020

To be eligible for CAPF 2020, the applicants must meet the particular Physical and Medical Standards as specified by the competent authority. This can be found on the official website of CAPF and candidates must take a look before applying. The details are provided below: -

Physical Standards

The minimum requirements that the candidate must meet vary according to gender and are as follows:

Medical Standards

The following medical standards must be satisfied in order to be eligible for UPSC CAPF AC:

It must be noted that if an applicant has undergone LASIK surgery correction, then it must have been according to prescribed criteria as mentioned below:

  • Age – 18 to 35 years
  • Axial-length – 21 to 26 mm.
  • Corneal-thickness 425 micron
  • Pre-LASIK error - 6 D
  • Post-operative - Should be stable period refractive flap
  • Interval - 06 months (post-operative period mandatory

NOTE: Candidate must have completed 06 months after LASIK surgery while considering for recruitment in CAPFs.

  1. Carrying angle

The Carrying angle should not be more than 15˚ for male applicants and 20˚ for female applicants.

  1. Hearing Power
  • No degree of deafness or persistent ear discharge should be present.
  • Any other condition (congenital or acquired) such as atresia of the meatus, exostosis, neoplasm which may cause obstruction of ear passage should not be present.
  • Any history of recurrent earache, tinnitus and vertigo should not be present.
  1. Nose
  • Applicants should not have DNS, atrophic rhinitis, tubercular ulceration or chronic sinusitis.
  1. Neck
  • Candidate should not have enlarged lymph nodes, thyroid or other swelling of neck.
  • An inability to extend the neck fully or any evidence of disease of spine or cervical vertebrae must not be present.
  1. Teeth
  • Candidate must possess sufficient number of sound teeth for efficient mastication.
  • Candidate should not have severe pyorrhoea.
  1. Venereal Disease
  • Candidate should not have active signs of clinical VD.
  1. Chronic skin diseases
  • Candidate should not have chronic skin diseases like Leprosy, chronic dermatitis, extensive Pityriasis Versicolor, psoriasis and SLE.
  1. General Standards:
  • No stammering while speaking
  • No indication of chronic diseases like TB, any type of arthritis, high blood pressure, Diabetes, Bronchial Asthma, any heart disease.
  • No perceptible and visible glandular swelling anywhere in the body.
  • Chest should be well formed, devoid of any abnormality like flat chest, Pigeon chest, with rickety rosary defects.
  • Heart and lungs should be sound.
  • Limbs, hands and feet should be well formed and fully developed.
  • Perfect motion of all joints should be seen.
  • Should not have any old /mal united fracture of bones.
  • Should not have congenital malformation or defects.
  • Should not bear traces of previous acute or chronic disease pointing to an impaired constitution.
  • Should have no disease of the genital urinary tract.
  • No inguinal, scrotal swelling or any type of Hernia.
  • Both the testicles are in the scrotum and of normal size.
  • No knock knees, flat foot, varicose veins.
  • Good mental and bodily health
  • Should not suffer from TACHYCARDIA (more than 100 pulse rate per minute) or BRADYCARDIA (Less than 50 per minute).
  • Should not suffer from Hernia, haemorrhoids, condylomas prolapse rectum.

CAPF 2019 NCC ‘B’ or ‘C’ Certificates

Another desirable qualification is the possession of NCC ‘B’ or ‘C’ Certificate. However, it must be noted that these qualifications will be considered at the time of Interview or Personality Test only. They will have no effect at the time of application.

Admit Card

UPSC CAPF 2020 Admit Card

Candidates shall be issued an Admit Card three weeks before the commencement of UPSC CAPF 2019 exam. The e-admission certificate will be made available online in the UPSC website, www.upsc.gov.in and www.upsconline.nic.in for downloading by candidates.

Admit Card will not be sent by post to candidates in any case. For downloading Admit Card for UPSC CAPF 2020 candidate must have RID (Registration Identity) & Date of Birth or Roll No. (if received) & date of birth or name, father's name & Date of Birth whichever is available.

Steps to Download Admit Card for UPSC CAPF 2020

  • Visit www.upsconline.nic.in
  • Go to Admit Card
  • Click on Admit Card for UPSC CAPF 2020
  • A form will open
  • Feed Information i.e. either Registration ID & Date of Birth OR Roll No. & Date of Birth OR Name, Father’s Name & Date of Birth
  • Click on Submit
  • Admit Card will be on screen
  • Download it or Print it

If a candidate does not receive Admit Card or any other communication regarding candidature for UPSC CAPF 2019 exam three weeks before the commencement of the exam, should contact the UPSC office. In case of any not receiving, complaint regarding UPSC CAPF Admit Card should be made from the Facilitation Counter at UPSC’s office either appearing individually or can contact over phone numbers as is mentioned here - 011-23381125 / 011- 23385271 / 011-23098543.

Candidate must inform to UPSC office minimum 3 weeks earlier from the exam day regarding non-receipt of Admit Card for UPSC CAPF Exam. Candidate should not expect to have any relaxation in appearing for UPSC CAPF exam without valid Admit Card in any case.

Candidate is advised to check UPSC CAPF 2019 Admit Card carefully and if any discrepancies or error is found put this to the notice of UPSC immediately. The candidate must understand that permission to appear in UPSC CAPF 2019 exam is based on the given information in application form for UPSC CAPF 2020.

Exam Coutoff

UPSC CAPF 2020 Exam Cut Off

Minimum Cut­ Off marks for qualifying the candidate for the selection process will be decided by Union Public Service Commission. In order to clear the written exam, candidates have to score the minimum cut off marks.

Below table given shows the minimum cut off mark declared for UPSC CAPF 2016 recruitment exam, which will be useful for the candidates in giving them a rough estimate of the current year’s expected cut off mark.

UPSC CAPF 2020 Personal Interview

The steps involved in the personal interview process are explained in detail below:

  • Candidates clearing the written exam by securing the minimum mark score set by Union Public Service Commission will be called for the next round of selection.
  • The next round in selection in UPSC CAPF 2020 recruitment is Physical Standards or Physical Efficiency Tests and Medical Standards Tests.
  • Appointment of the selected candidates is subjected to medical fitness requirement as per the norms specified by Union Public Service Commission.
  • Candidates who qualify in the Physical test and medical standards test will be called for the next level of selection in UPSC CAPF 2019 recruitment.
  • The next and final round in this selection process is Interview or Personality Test.
  • Based on the performance of candidates and mark scored in the Interview or Personality Test, they will be offered the appointment order.
