About GRE

GRE is the most commonly required standardised admission test for the students who would like to take an admission in a graduation school. Just like SAT and ACT, GRE consist of topics like, analytical writing, quantitative analysis and verbal reasoning. These are the skills the students develop over the years, and many universities worldwide will assess the GRE scores as an eligibility criterion for their admission process, since 1949.

GRE, or Graduate Records Examination is a trademark of ETS, a USA based organisation. ETS GRE manage and conduct tests all over the world (across 1000 GRE test centers in 160 countries). ETS stands for Educational Testing Service. GRE online is a computer based test, with the GRE scoring done from 130 to 170 for Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing scored on a scale of 0-6. Before a major over haul in 2011. GRE used to for the scores in 200-800. The GRE test is more section based rather than other tests, which are question based like SAT. For GRE exam, the performance in the GRE mathematics and GRE reasoning will determine the difficulty level of the further coming sections.

Types of GRE test:

There are two types of GRE tests:

1. GRE General Test

2. GRE Subject Test

GRE General Test:

GRE general test is a more comprehensive assessment of candidate’s quantitative and reasoning abilities. It is the most commonly taken test type of GRE. It either can be just for the admission formality, or for the merit based admission in a particular course for Master of Science (MS) or Master of Business Administration (MBA).

GRE Subject Test:

GRE Subject Test, as the name suggest, is taken by the students who want to make their application stand out in a particular subject, and have an edge for a particular score. A GRE subject test shows the candidate’s skills for a particular field of specialization, and therefore it is useful to the students who already have a bachelor’s degree and want to go ahead with a particular subject.

GRE Subject Tests are taken for: Biology, GRE Chemistry, English Literature, Mathematics, Physics GRE, and Psychology.

How To Prepare

GRE exam pattern is as follow- three sections, namely, Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. The Analytical Writing section will always be the first, whereas, the Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and unscored sections may appear in any order. Along with the time duration difference, the pattern also differs for paper-based and online exams.

Verbal Reasoning section is an assessment of Candidate’s ability to analyse the given data and understand what the text has to offer:

  • Understand the structure of the text and summarise it.

  • Choose the most relevant and irrelevant parts of the data and identify them. Learn how to differentiate them.

  • Analyse the data given, and understand what author has to say. Draw your own conclusion and add something of your own if needed.

Quantitative Aptitude is assessment of Candidate’s ability to apply basic concepts of mathematics to the conceptual problems. GRE math questions contain:

  • Interpret the Data that is given in any chart, graph or tabular form and answer the question accordingly.

The syllabus for the quantitative aptitude consists of a number of questions from Geometry, Linear Equations, Lines and Angles, Number Properties, Percentage, Permutation and Combination, Pipes and Cistern/Work and Time, Power/Roots and Cubes, Profit-Loss, Quadratic Equations, Ratio and Proportion, Simple and Compound Interest, Statistics, Speed, Distance and Time

Analytical Writing is the assessment of Candidate’s ability to analyse an issue or argument, and put up the ideas, arguments and conclusions in the words.

  • Put your ideas with clarity in your language, however complex.

  • Those ideas must be supported by right and logical examples.

  • Give relevant evidence and examine the claims that have been made.

  • Write in a single flow; keep your thoughts aligned to the topic and the narrative in a straight line.

How long is the GRE test?

The total time duration for GRE online test is 3 hours and 45 minutes. There are short breaks given between sections to students. The GRE Test format, and time division is as given below:

GRE Experimental Section:

This section is not counted when the final assessment is done; it might contain experimental questions for Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning. It has new questions from the ETS, which might be used in future. The test-takers do not know which section is experimental section; therefore, they are advised to give their best in each section. The scores of Experimental section are not counted in final report.

Exam Eligibility
  • There is no age and qualification bar to sit in GRE. Students who have completed their under graduation program can take GRE to get the admission in a PG program, especially if they want to study in US or Canada.

  • The students might check the University websites and courses to understand if they need to take the GRE exam or not. As different Universities have different score requirements and criteria, university and course requirements should be checked before appearing for any exam.

Admit Card

After the process of Registration is done, the Admit Card / A confirmation mail will be sent to the candidate. Candidate will have to bring that admit card or confirmation mail to the test centre on the test day at the reporting time. It is a confirmation to you exam type, GRE test date and time and GRE test location.
