Indian education sector is being governed by two major boards providing quality education and are widely recognized and accepted boards all over the country. The choice of choosing the right board makes a significant difference in the child’s growth and future.  The education system in India is split into primary, secondary and senior secondary levels.

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)
Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is a national board organized by the Union Government of India. Certification from CBSE board is acknowledged across India. CBSE conducts two major examinations – All India Secondary School Examination (AISSE) in Grade-X and All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE) in Grade – XII. The CBSE curriculum is much planned and is suitable for qualifying in diverse entrance examinations. In CBSE Board, the focus is on science and math with a lot of attention paid to the application of knowledge.

The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE)
The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) is not aboard. The big surprise here! Actually, Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) is equivalent to CBSE which conducts ICSE examination. Anglo Indian Board was taken over by the CISCE. ICSE Board gives equivalent focus on Arts, Language, and Science. The Board promotes understanding and growth of analytical skills. More choice and freedom is offered to students in deciding final subjects. The syllabus is detailed and intricate and covers all fields of study.

Let’s discuss the difference between the two: CBSE Pros:

  • CBSE Schools have its own share of pros, and the biggest advantage is that all major competitive examinations in India are based on the CBSE syllabus. These examinations include the Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE), the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT).
  • The CBSE syllabus is easier compared to that of other boards, primarily due to fewer subjects and a more compact composition. Secondary subjects like Environmental Education are not compulsory under the CBSE syllabus. The subjects of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology contain under the umbrella of Science, and History, Geography and Civics fall under the collection of Social Sciences.
  • A certificate from the Central Board of Education is acknowledged all over the country, in colleges and academic centers. The curriculum is more application based under CBSE, as the board follows a specific curriculum.

Cons:

  • Not much focus is laid to impart practical thinking in students. The CBSE syllabus also does not lay as much importance on core English knowledge as its counterpart does, choosing to lay more importance on the disciplines of mathematics and science.
  • The subjects in a CBSE syllabus are approached in a theoretical manner, and the true emphasis is not laid on real-life concepts behind the science. Even though the syllabus is application-oriented, it does not provide room for efficient understanding.

 ICSE Pros:

  • The syllabus followed by the ICSE board is more inclusive and total, encompassing all fields with equal significance.
  • Students who are involved in careers like management and humanities will find the curriculum followed under ICSE to be more appealing and tricky, not to mention fruitful.
  • Indian Certificate of Secondary Education board will be acknowledged around the world, particularly by foreign schools and universities when compared to the central board’s local margin.
  • Due to the importance laid on English in ICSE, students from this board may have a trivial edge over other students in exams like TOEFL.

Cons:

  • Students may find the syllabus to be extensive for their liking, as an average student practicing under an ICSE board will face thirteen subjects/examinations during the sixth grade when compared to the subjects faced by the student’s in a CBSE associated school.
  • Although an ICSE syllabus can facilitate deeper understanding and better life skills and analytical skills, pursuing further education may prove to be a problem due to a lack of leniency in evaluating papers after an ISC examination.

These boards share an equal amount of pros and cons, and choosing the right board will wholly depend on the future you foresee for your children. The quality of education provided by both boards is outstanding, so all you’ll need to do is evaluate your children’s strengths and then determine the right board for them.
